OVERVIEW
Classic and modern are adjectives which accurately describe
the range of designs which were created by some of the foremost architects
and industrial designers of the 1960s and 1970s for Artemide.
This exhibition was created in 1999 in honor of Artemide's
40th anniversary. While
Artemide today is known the world over for its expanding
collection of lighting design, in the late 1960s through the 1970s, Artemide,
in addition to its signature lighting, also produced an incredible range
of chairs, tables, clocks, ashtrays, umbrella stands, and desk accessories.
In an effort to highlight the incredible breadth of Artemide's
manufacturing range, we
have recreated an exhibition of the extant designs from
Artemide in 1973. Indeed,
working with an original catalogue and photographs from
the 1973 Catalogo
Artemide, we have created a snapshot of the company's
breadth of production.
The exhibition is divided into type of object (e.g. furniture,
table lamps, objects) and
with each photograph, there is designer identification,
year in which the object was designed (when possible to ascertain), the
object's dimensions, and its available color range in 1973.
This exhibition represents a new format in which retromodern.com
will present its virtual exhibitions. In addition to the exhibition,
biographical designer links are being added to enhance your appreciation
of the objects created by these individuals.
Enjoy!
Special thanks to Robert Ruiz for his incredible support
of this virtual exhibition and to friends, Patrick and Alix Everaert,
whose mutual enthusiasm for Artemide (and great design from the 1960s/70s)
is the inspiration for this 40th anniversary exhibition.
